Đạo Mẫu Sacred Sites: Temples, Pilgrimage and Etiquette
A cultural guide to major Đạo Mẫu temples, pilgrimage seasons and respectful visitor etiquette in northern Vietnam.
A sacred geography
Phủ Dầy, Phủ Tây Hồ, Đông Cuông, Bắc Lệ, Bảo Hà, Sòng Sơn and the temple of Ông Hoàng Mười are major pilgrimage destinations. Each has local traditions, lunar feast dates and its own ritual calendar.
Responsible visiting
Dress modestly, avoid obstructing worship, ask before photographing ceremonies and do not reduce a living religion to spectacle. Confirm festival dates with local custodians before travelling.
